Brigitte is a loa of death, wife of Baron samedi , It protects tombstones and cemeteries, provided they are suitably provided with the cross of Baron Samedi. The tombs protected by Brigitte are marked by a mound of stones. In the practice of voodoo, the first burials serve as offerings to Baron Samedi or Maman Brigitte depending on the sex of the person buried. Thus, if the deceased person is a man, the tomb is dedicated to Baron Samedi; if the deceased is a woman, the tomb is dedicated to Maman Brigitte.

As a New World voodoo deity, Maman Brigitte likely originated in the ancestral practices of voodoo.
